Neck

Carotid duplex ultrasound

Creates images and evaluates blood-flow patterns in the carotid arteries of the neck.

General preparation: Often no special preparation. An open-neck shirt may be more comfortable.

Arms & legs

Upper & lower extremity venous duplex

Evaluates the veins in an arm or leg for a blood clot or other obstruction. Venous reflux is assessed with a separate, dedicated protocol.

General preparation: Often no special preparation. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Leg veins

Venous reflux study

Uses a dedicated protocol to evaluate vein function and whether blood flows backward (reflux) in the leg veins.

General preparation: You may be asked to change position or stand for part of the study.

Arms & legs

Upper & lower extremity arterial duplex

Creates images and measures blood-flow patterns in the arteries of an arm or leg.

General preparation: Often no special preparation.

Circulation

ABI & physiologic testing

Compares blood-pressure measurements at the ankles with those in the arms. Related physiologic testing may use additional cuffs and Doppler measurements at multiple limb levels.

General preparation: Wear clothing that allows access to your arms and legs.

Abdomen

Abdominal aortic ultrasound

Creates images and measurements of the abdominal aorta for clinician-ordered screening or follow-up.

General preparation: Fasting may be required.

Renal artery duplex

Evaluates blood flow in the arteries that supply the kidneys.

General preparation: Fasting may be required.

Mesenteric artery duplex

Evaluates blood flow in the arteries that supply the digestive organs.

Dialysis access evaluation

Evaluates blood flow through an arteriovenous fistula or graft used for dialysis access.
