Measuring the width of the main artery in your abdomen.

Abdominal aortic ultrasound obtains images and diameter measurements of the aorta, the main artery in the abdomen. Measurements may be compared with prior studies when available. Follow any fasting instructions provided with your appointment.

What it looks for

  • The diameter of the aorta at several levels
  • Any segment that is wider than the rest
  • The shape and course of the vessel down to where it divides
  • A direct comparison with previous measurements, if there are any

Will there be pressure on my abdomen?

The sonographer may apply pressure with the transducer to obtain images. Report any pain or discomfort during the examination.

Will I need to fast?

Fasting may be requested for an abdominal vascular examination. Follow the preparation instructions provided with your appointment.

How will I receive my results?

A clinician reviews the images and measurements to prepare a report. The practice will publish its results and report-delivery process before appointments become available.

The gel is wiped off and you can eat straight away. Bring something with you if you were asked to fast.
