Your visit

Before. During. After.

Preparation, examination, and follow-up information.

01

Before your visit

Check the preparation details provided with your appointment before arrival.

02

During the exam

A sonographer applies water-soluble gel and moves a handheld transducer over the area being examined. You may hear pulse-like Doppler sounds.

03

After the exam

The gel is removed and most patients return to their usual activities. The practice’s reporting process determines how and when results are shared.

General preparation

A little context goes a long way.

Preparation varies by exam. Follow the instructions included with your appointment, even if they differ from the general guidance here.

Dress comfortably

Wear loose-fitting clothing. You may need to remove clothing or jewelry from the area being examined, and a gown may be provided.

Follow your instructions

Neck, arm, and leg studies often need no special preparation; abdominal studies may require fasting.

Keep medication routine

Do not change how you take medication unless your clinician or the practice gives you specific instructions.
